Acer Makes Foray into High-end Smartphone Market

Taiwanese Acer announced on September 7 that the company launched a high-end Smartphone based on the Google Android platform, dubbed the Stream, making the company's foray into the high-end Smartphone market, Taiwan's United Daily News reported on September 8. The Stream features an AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) touchscreen, Dolby Mobile sound, a HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port for connectivity with TV and a 5MP high-definition phone camera. Under the agreement, this new Smartphone will be sold through Taiwanese telecom operator Far EasTone and Acer stated that the company already signed similar distribution agreements with 19 telecom operators worldwide. At the end of September 2010, five Android-enabled Smartphones will be available in Australia, including the Acer Stream. Aside from Acer, other brand-name vendors also launched a variety of Smartphones based on Android OS, including HTC (Desire, Legend, and Wildfire), Samsung (Galaxy S), Motorola (Milestone, Backflip and Dext), Sony Ericsson (Xperia X10 and X10 mini pro) and LG (Optimus and GW620). Acer is projected to sell between 400,000 and 500,000 Smartphone by the year-end 2010, according to the same source.
